Core ideas and principles of Liberalism-Individualism Flashcards
Individualism intro
Liberals stress the importance of the individual over claims of any social group or collective-Immanuel Kant(1724-1804).
Immanuel Kant(1724-1804)
A german Enlightenment thinker argued that all individuals are unique and have equal worth and so people should not be treated as instruments to achieve a particular goal because it has its own intrinsic value.
Categorical imperative
An absolute moral requirement to perform an action for its own sake, rather than for any gain.
Classical Liberals
They believe in egotistical individualism-which s the view that people are essentially self-seeking and self-reliant. And this minimises the importance of society.
Tolerance
This one of the natural rights that every liberal believe everyone should have, which should not be taken away against the will of the individual. For example, liberals have relaxed views over matters such as sexual matters-same sex relationships, etc because they are a private lifestyle choice.
