Core:
1. Control of the Air Definition
Ability to conduct operations in air, land and maritime domains without effective interference from adversary air power and air defence capabilities.
Core:
1. Control of the Air Subsets
- Air Supremacy: Degree of control where opposing is incapable of interfering (not achievable).
- Air Superiority: Degree of dominance in air over adversary at given place and time (can do what you want when you need to).
- Air Parity: Exists when control of air contested.
- Unfavourable Air Situation: Likely not to achieve mission or come home.
- Defensive Counter Air (DCA): Defensive measures to detect, identify, intercept and destroy or neutralise effectiveness of adversary.
> Active - radars, surface to air missiles, etc.
> Passive - cam & conc, structure hardening, etc. - Offensive Counter Air (OCA): Offensive air activity conducted to destroy, degrade, neutralise, disrupt or contain adversary.
Core:
2. Strike Definition + Types
Ability to attack with intention of damaging, neutralising or destroying target.
- Deliberate - Plan for
- Dynamic - Opportunity
Core:
2. Strike Subsets
- Strategic Attack (SA): Offensive air activity to employ AP to create specific strategic effects.
- Close Air Support
- Air Interdiction (AI): Conducted to divert, disrupt, delay, degrade, or destroy adversary’s capability before it can be used. Examples: vehicle convoy, ships docked.
- Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW: Air activity conducted to deny adversary effective use of surface vessels.
- Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Air activity conducted with intention of denying effective submarine use and/or unmanned underwater vehicles.
- Electronic Warfare (EW): Air activity to search for, intercept and identify electromagnetic emissions; use of electromagnetic energy to attack enemy assets. Three categories:
> Electronic protection
> Electronic support
> Electronic attack - Information Operations (IO)
Core:
3. Air Mobility Definition
Ability to move personnel, materials and forces using platforms.
Core:
3. Air Mobility Subsets
- Air Logistics Support: Deploy, distribute or recover personnel, material or forces in uncontested environment.
- Airborne Operations: Deliver personnel, material or forces into contested objective area by airdrop or air land.
Core:
4. ISR Definition + Assets
Operation of sensors, assets, and processing, exploitation and dissemination systems in support of operations.
- Triton can be placed in heavier risk, higher threat environment due to it being unmanned.
- Wedgetail utilises air surveillance radar, likely sit off coast conducting figure 8 tracks with radar beaming sideways to maintain constant picture of battlespace.
- AP-3C (EW): Soak all electromagnetic spectrum and energy on island.
- Poseidon: Over water, sanitizes approaches into harbour.
Enabling:
1. C2 Subsets
- Air Campaigning: Planning, targeting, execution.
- Battlespace Management: Air & space, EW, airspace management.
Enabling:
2. Force Protection Definition + Subsets
Minimise vulnerability to any threat while preserving freedom of action and operational effectiveness.
- Air Base Protection
- Joint Personnel Recovery
- Defensive Cyber Operations
- Information Operations
Enabling:
3. Force Generation & Sustainment Subsets
- Force Generation & Capability Development
- Force Preparation and Sustainment (logistics, personnel, training & education, safety & airworthiness)
- Air & Space Systems Support
- Combat Support (air bases, infrastructure)
- Operational Support (test & evaluate, simulation & experimentation, range management)
- International Engagement
