Command Definition
Authority which a commander lawfully exercises over subordinates virtue of rank/assignment.
“You own them”
Control Definition
Authority exercised by commander over part of activities of subordinate organisations not normally under their command.
“Authority you are given, to achieve task, in set timeframe, for desired result.”
C2 Definition
Process and means for exercise of authority over, and lawful direction of, assigned forces by designated commander.
Levels of Command:
1. National Strategic
Set parameters for operational campaigns.
Involves: Australian Government
Role: Define strategic objectives and end state. Coordinate military activities.

2. Military Strategic
Set parameters for operational campaigns.
Involves: (1) CDF and (2) CJOPs
Role: (1) Coordinate military strategic planning for operations. (2) Plans and conducts operations, direct force composition, C2, etc.

3. Operational
Conducts campaigns/operations. Force prep and development.
Involves: (1) CDF and (2) Commander of Joint Task Force
Role: (1) Coordinate military strategic planning for operations. (2) Commands assigned force elements to achieve desired objectives. Allocates resources etc.

4. Tactical
“Fight battles” Tactical military actions.
Involves: FEG Commanders
Role: Take military actions to generate effects and achieve objectives.
Leadership Definition
Process of influencing others to gain their willing consent in the ethical pursuit of missions.
