Outline ‘Positive Motivation’ - including examples
Any motivational factor that is perceived as desirable + something worthy of personal investment to achieve
- Desire to succeed in a task that will lead to happiness/ satisfaction
E.g.’s: financial reward, rep team selection, gold medal, adoration of fans, improved contract, personal satisfaction, achieve personal best
Outline ‘Negative Motivation’ - including examples
The desire to succeed in a task to avoid unpleasant/undesirable consequences
- Can have longterm effect on health = destruction of confidence, initiative, belief in oneself
E.g’s: being dropped from a team/losing contract, losing + suffering the humiliation of defeat, not achieving what they believed to be their full potential, threats from coach for extra training
(don’t need to know all, just 1-2 examples)
Outline ‘Intrinsic Motivation’ - including examples
A motivational factor that is derived from within
- Internally motivated athlete is almost self-propelled towards success + hard work
- The most powerful + sustainable form of motivation
E.g’s Athletes motivated by the feeling of success motivated to beat their PB
What is ‘Extrinsic Motivation’ + example
Any motivational factor derived from an external source
- Can be either positive or negative
- Desire to succeed to gain an external reward
- Sustained motivation relies more on internal factors
- Advised athletes should focus on extrinsic goals from a reliable controlled source such as a coach
E.g’s: trophies, money, praise, avoidance of punishment
