Core 2 - Environmental Change Flashcards
Changes in the environment affect…
Distribution of organisms
Animals and plants are subjected by environmental changes because of
Non-living factors: •temperature • rainfall • air or water pollution Living factors: • change in competitor • food sources • disease
Lichens are living organism that indicate change in pollution how?
They are sensitive to the contraction of sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere so if they are very hard to find in an area it will be a polluted area.
Invertebrate animals can indicate concentration of dissolved oxygen in water how?
Some are very sensitive to the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water so if there aren’t many the water is polluted. E.g. Mayfly larvae
Invertebrate animals can indicate water pollution how?
There will be a lot of them in a polluted area e.g. Maggots
What non-living indicators can measure environmental change?
Environmental changes:
• satellites used to measure temperature of sea surface and snow
• rainfall measured using rain gauges
• dissolved oxygen meters used to measure concentration of dissolved oxygen in water, to discover how the levels of water pollution is changing
