Core 2: Circulatory Flashcards
Where is blood carried
Away from the heart via the arteries and into the heart vvia veins
Role of valves
prevents blood from circulating backwards
Role of red blood cells
Red blood cells (erythrocytesare formed in bone marrow– contains haemoglobin which is responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues
Role of white blood cells
Leukocytes fight infection and disease, they develop in bone marrow and lymph nodes
Role of Platelets
Responsible for blood clots and prevents blood loss
What is plasma
55% of blood is plasma but constructed of 90% water and 10% dissolved substances
- transports blood cells, digested foods and waste e.g glucose and carbon dioxide respecctively
How does blood flow through the heart
Blood from the body enters through the right atrium and goes through the right ventricle and leaaves via the pulmonary artery to pick up O2 from lungs . Then travels back to heart via left atrium and through the left vventricle and through aorta
What is stroke volume
The amount of blood pumped out of the left ventricles in one contraction and thus increases cardiac output
What is cardiac output
The amount of blood pumped from the heart in one minute
= stroke volume x heart rate
What is it called when muscles increase in size ith exercise
muscular hypertrophy
