coping with stress: biofeedback Flashcards
1
Q
explain the concept of biofeedback?
A
- client connected to machine that converts physiological activity into a visual or auditory signal
- eg heart rate is monitored
2
Q
explain the training procedure?
A
- clients trained to use feedback to become aware of their physiological functioning
- they learn how to make adjustments to move signals in desired direction
- they do this by applying stress management techniques to slow heartbeat
3
Q
evaluate EMG research into biofeedback?
A
- STRENGTH
- used EMG w/ breast cancer patients
- 13, 45min sessions over 8 weeks where they learnt relation techniques
- found levels of urinary cortisol and self reported anxiety were lower
- control group showed increase in cortisol
4
Q
evaluate individual differences?
A
- WEAKNESS
- doesn’t suit everyone
- client needs to understand relationship between their physiological functioning and signals they receive
- need to then be motivated to apply skills to alter signals
- not all are motivated and drugs may be easier
- dont need to commit or take time off work
5
Q
evaluate convenience?
A
- STRENGTH
- use is much more convenient and inexpensive then it used to be
- recent devices are as small as a mobile phone
- even can be used as wearable technology
- more accessible and easier to use biofeedback during these everyday stressful situations
