To face the stress head on! Recognize it and get ready to deal with it
Transactional model of stress
- stress is seen as a process
- continuous, unique person - environmental interactions determine stress response
- cognitive appraisal (how we think about something)

Transactions
Emotional based coping
- regulating the emotion tied to the stressful situation, without changing the realities of the situation
Examples: acceptance, avoidance, distancing, seeking emotional support, selective attention - exam stress
Problem based coping
- used when we feel competent to deal with the stressor
- problem solving the situations
- define the problem, generate and evaluate solutions, learn skills to mange stressor, reappraise
Example: studying for an exam
Locus of control
- refers to an individuals perceptions of where the underlying responsibilities of life events reside
- septrum
Learned helplessness
- opposite of feeling in control
- learned belief that their is nothing one can do to improve a bad situation
- more common in people with trauma
Resilience
- a life long process where children of disturbed or incompetent parents learn to adapt to adverse circumstances through a variety of coping stradiges and are able to flourish despite sometimes overwhelming onsticals
- explored extensively in the domain of developmental psychology

Emphasizes the importance of the mother-infant relationship which allows the child to developed self confidence, and a sense of security, which protects the child later on in life and helps the child cope with separation adversity
The resilient personality
Def esteem —> confidence —> optimism —> hope —> autonomy —> ability to cope with stress —> sociability —> capacity to live with a broad range of emotions —> positive attitude when dealing with solving problems
Family residence
- ability of a family to respond positively to an adverse event, and emerge strengthened, more resourceful, and more confident
Spirituality and religious beliefs
- can be tremendously effective in helping individuals cope and can even enhance the immune system and increase a sense of wellbeing
