Acting out
Expressing unacceptable feelings through impulsive physical actions
ie: resident shamed by attending –> pounds on desk
Denial
Behaving as if an aspect of reality does not exist
Displacement
Transferring feelings assoc with an upsetting object/person, to a more acceptable object/person
ie: resident shamed by attending –> makes sarcastic shaming comments to student
Intellectualization
Using intellect to avoid uncomfortable feelings
Passive aggression
Avoiding conflict by expressing hostility covertly
Projection
Attributing one’s own feelings to others
ie: you hate someone, so you think they hate you
Reaction formation
Responding in a manner opposite to one’s actual feelings
ie: you don’t want to care for your cousin (you hate your cousin), but you care for them in an overexaggerated way
Regression
Reverting to earlier developmental stage
ie: young wife going back to parents’ home after quarrel with husband
Splitting
Seeing others as all good or all bad
MATURE: Sublimation
Channeling impulses into socially acceptable behaviors
ie: extreme anger –> kick boxing
MATURE: Suppression
Putting unwanted feelings aside to cope with reality
