What is happiness?
- A positive evaluation of life that is not unique to any one phase of development
- More likely to be experienced by individuals less sensitive to social comparison, less self absorbed, and more positive outlook on life.

Internal vs. external locus of control
Internal-you control
External-you have no control, all based on environment
Symptoms of depression
- Loss of appetite
- Trouble sleeping
- depressed mood
- loss of interest
- thoughts of worthlessness
- thoughts of suicide

Causes of depression?
- Runs in families
- Imbalance of neurotransmitters
- Diathesis model-already pre disposed because of genetics, then stress-causes disorder
Risk factors for depression?
- Biological relative with disorder
- Severe stressor
- low self esteem
- female
- poverty
Symptoms in older adults?
-more somatic symptoms i.e insomnia, weight loss vs. feelings of worthlessness
Treatment for depression?
- Cognitive behavioural therapy
- Psychotherapy
- Reminisce and life review
- Antidepressants-6 weeks to work
Why is it under diagnosed?
- Lack of time
- Lack of training
- False belief they will just get better
- Atypical symptoms in older adults
Signs of substance abuse?
- Memory
- Trouble finishing sentences
- Loss of coordination
- unexplained bruises
- not clean
Acute alcohol withdrawl
=medical emergency
- 6 to 12 hours after last drink
- tremors, anxiety, nausea, insomnia
How to treat acute alcohol withdrawal?
-short acting benzodiazepines, one half to one third the original dosage
Anxiety
- unpleasant or unwarranted feeling of apprehension
- unrealistic and excessive worrying
Medical causes?
- delirium
- depression
- dementia
- heart failure
- hypothyroid
- withdrawal
Medication causes?
- anticholergenics
- caffeine
- anti hypertensives
Treatment for anxiety?
- family support
- therapists and group therapy
- cognitive behavioural therapy
- antidepressants
- short acting benzodiazepines
Risk factors for suicide?
- older age
- previous attempt
- mental illness
- substance use
- social, physical, financial loss
- lonely, little socialization
How to assess for suicide?
-Ask frank, specific questions
‘Have you thought of killing yourself?’
‘How?’
‘With what?’
