What are appraisal focused coping skills
- Logical analysis and mental preparation - turning an unmanageable situation in to many manageable ones
- Cognitive redefinition - accepting the reality of the situation and defining it in a positive way
- Cognitive avoidance - minimising the seriousness of the situation
What are problem focused coping skills
- Seeking information and support - build a knowledge base
- Taking problem solving action - learning specific procedures and behaviours e.g insulin injections
- Identifying alternatives rewards - development and planning of events for short term satisfaction
What are emotion focused coping skills
- Affective - maintain hope while dealing with a difficult situation
- Emotional discharge - venting feelings of anger
- Resigned acceptance - coming to terms with inevitable outcome of illness
