Middle age/Older adults
3 Symptoms of COPD
Shortness of breath,
Frequent chest infections,
Persistent chesty cough.
What is the main cause of COPD?
Smoking
What happens to the lungs when someone has COPD?
The Lungs become inflamed, damaged and narrowed.
What is another cause of COPD?
Long term exposure to harmful fumes or dust.
Who begins the diagnostic process for COPD?
GP
Who will the GP refer the individual to if needed?
A Pulmonologist
What does the GP do to diagnose COPD?
Evaluates symptoms, smoking history and may order simple tests.
What will a pulmonologist do?
Preform detailed tests and a more definitive diagnosis.
3 Treatment options for COPD
Stop smoking,
Inhalers/medication,
Pulmonary rehabilitation (a programme of exercise and education)
How to prevent COPD?
Avoid smoking/ stop smoking.
