Coordination Compounds Flashcards
What are simple salts
Salts which give only one type of ion are simple salts
What are double salts
Salts which give more than one type of ion are double salts
What are co-ordination compounds
Compounds which does not give simple salts after ionisation are co-ordination compounds
What are co-ordination entities
Main part of complex compounds which consists the central atom and ligands are co-ordination entities
What is central atom
Metal ion which accepts lone pair electrons from the ligands through coordinate bond are central atom
What are ligands
Species which donate lone pair electrons to empty orbital of central atom are ligands
What are ambidentate ligands
Ligands which have two donor atom but one donate at a time
What is coordinate number
Total no of coordinate bonds around central atom is known as coordination no
What is Werner theory
Metal ion shows two types of valency
Primary valency is ionisable so it is temporary valency
Secondary valency is unionisable so it is permanent valency
What are drawback of Werner theory
1 unable to explain hydration of CC
2 unable to explain type of geometry
3 unable to explain coloured nature of CC
4 unable to explain magnetic nature of CC
What is VBT
During the formation of CC empty orbitals accept lone pair electrons from ligands .
In this manner it occupy a definite hybridisations
Drawbacks of VBT
1 unable to explain coloured nature of CC
2 unable to explain why sometimes pairing of electron occurs
3 unable to explain strength of ligand
What is CFT theory
In this theory CC is assumed to be ionic
Their is splitting of d orbital
State CFT for Octahedral
On attacking of ligand their is splitting of d orbital such that out of 5 , 2 face towards ligand to get more energy than other 3
What are metal carbonyl
Those CC in which central atom attached with carbonyl ligands are metal carbonyl
