Coordination And Control Flashcards
what is the main job of the nervous system?
to enable you to react to your surroundings and coordinate your behavior
how do you respond to changes in your surroundings?
changes (stimuli) are picked up by receptor cells clustered in sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, touch)
what is a difference between a neuron and a nerve?
nerves are bundles of neurons (hundreds or thousands)
list how does the nervous system work?
receptor - sensory neuron - coordinator (CNS) - motor neuron - effector
what is the difference between a sensory neuron and a motor neuron?
sensory neurons carry impulses from your sense organs to your central nervous system (CNS)
motor neurons carry impulses from the CNS to the rest of your body to stimulate the muscles to contract
what does ‘motor’ mean as in motor neurons?
movement
what are effector organs?
muscles or glands which respond to the impulses from the motor neurons
