Cooling strategies Flashcards

1
Q

Behavioural Thermoregulation

A
  • Add or remove clothing
  • Adjust conditions of thermal environment (air conditioning / shade)
  • Adjust work rate (metabolic heat production)
  • Re-schedule work (cooler parts of the day/night)
  • Employ varying work / rest schedules

Q

How much heat do we lose?

A

When hot, most heat loss is by evaporation of sweat
• Radiation, conduction and convection heat loss very low or negative (usually)
• 1 litre of sweat evaporating per hour = 627 W cooling

Q

Macro cooling

A

Macro - Air conditioning:

  • Effective for many workers
  • Costly
  • Impractical or impossible for many tasks
