Cooling strategies Flashcards
1
Q
Behavioural Thermoregulation
A
- Add or remove clothing
- Adjust conditions of thermal environment (air conditioning / shade)
- Adjust work rate (metabolic heat production)
- Re-schedule work (cooler parts of the day/night)
- Employ varying work / rest schedules
2
Q
Heat generated at rest
A
60-90 W
3
Q
Heat generated at light work
A
230 W
4
Q
Heat generated at Maximal work
A
1350 W
5
Q
How much heat do we lose?
A
When hot, most heat loss is by evaporation of sweat
• Radiation, conduction and convection heat loss very low or negative (usually)
• 1 litre of sweat evaporating per hour = 627 W cooling
6
Q
Macro cooling
A
Macro - Air conditioning:
- Effective for many workers
- Costly
- Impractical or impossible for many tasks
7
Q
Microclimate cooling
A
Microclimate cooling
- Cooling between the skin and clothing
- PPE wear
- Individual control
8
Q
Examples of Conductive (and convective) cooling:
A
Ice vest Phase change vests Hand cooling Hand and feet cooling Ice vest vs. hand immersion
