Bake
to cook food in an oven with the heat below the food
Beat
to thoroughly mix foods using a vigorous motion
Boil
to heat a liquid until it forms large bubbles which break the surface continuously
Broil
Cook with heat over food
Baste
to brush or pour a liquid over a food as it cooks
Combine
to thoroughly incorporate one ingredient into another, using a wooden spoon, wire whisk, rotary beater, electric mixer, or electric blender
Cream
to beat together ingredients, such as shortening and sugar, until soft and creamy
Deglaze
to dissolve fragments remaining in a frying or roasting pan by heating them and adding a liquid so as to make a sauce
Dredge
to coat a food with a dry ingredient, such as flour or crumbs
Fold
to gently combine ingredients by taking the ingredients from the bottom of the mixing bowl and placing them on top
Ladle
to serve food such as soup onto a plate or into a bowl using a ladle
Marinate
to be placed or soaked in a sauce before cooking
Poach
To cook food gently in liquid just below the boiling point
Pour
to make a substance flow out or down in a stream
Preheat
to heat an oven to a particular temperature before putting food into it to be cooked
Sauté
to cook something quickly in a small amount of butter or oil
Score
to cut a notch or incision cut into the surface of something of a food
Sift
to pass a substance through a sieve to separate out or break up coarse particles
Simmer
to cook something gently just below boiling point, usually with the occasional bubble breaking on the surface
Steam
to cook something above, but not in, boiling water
Stir
to move a liquid around with in a circular motion with a tool/implement in order to mix or cool the content
Whip
to incorporate air into a mixture to make it light and fluffy
