Convergent Plate Margins Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 types of convergent plate margins
A
- Oceanic and continental
- Oceanic and oceanic
- Continental and continental
2
Q
Outline what occurs when oceanic crust meets continental crust
A
- Oceanic pushes against continental
- Oceanic sinks below continental
- Oceanic lithosphere subducts under less dense continental lithosphere
- Oceanic crust descends into mantle (A.K.A. Subduction slab)
3
Q
Outline what occurs when oceanic crust meets oceanic crust
A
- One plate slightly older and denser than other
- Denser plate subducts into mantle, forming subduction zone
- Subducting plate forms very deep depression called a trench e.g. Mariana Trench (11km deep)
4
Q
Outline what occurs when continental crust meets continental crust
A
- Known as collision margin
- No subduction takes place
- Ocean sediment trapped between two plate heaved upwards forming fold mountain ranges
5
Q
What hazards occur at convergent plate margins?
A
- Violent and gentle earthquakes
- Explosive volcanic activity
