Q

What happens when 2 continental plates collide? (process)

A

Neither of them sink to the mantle, they move upwards or sideways sometimes causing earthquakes.

Q

Describe subduction…

A

The heavier oceanic slides beneath the lighter continental crust. As it slides into the asthenoshere, it melts and is recycled. A deep ocean trench is created e.g. the Peru-Chile trench. The pressure on the continental plate causes it to buckle and fold creating a fold mountain. As the oceanic plate is melting, it produces volcanoes.

Q

Why is the Pacific ring of fire named so?

A

Because many active volcanoes created at subduction zones mark the edge of the Pacific plate

Q

Give an example of 2 O plates that are colliding?

Q

How are island arcs formed?

A

Island Arcs are curved lines of volcanic island. When the subducted plate sinks and melts it creates plumes of magma that breaks through the crust above. The active volcanoes build up on the sea floor for millions of years until they appear above the surface of the water.
