Convergent ( Destructive ) Plate boundaries Flashcards
What feature is created at a continental - continental destructive plate boundarie? Give example
Fold Mountains e.g. the Alps
Give example of a continental plate that is colliding with another continental plate?
Eurasian and Indian plates.
What happens when 2 continental plates collide? (process)
Neither of them sink to the mantle, they move upwards or sideways sometimes causing earthquakes.
What type of rock are fold mountains often composed of?
Sedimentary rocks e.g. limestone
What is the process called when a oceanic collides with a continental?
Subduction
Describe subduction…
The heavier oceanic slides beneath the lighter continental crust. As it slides into the asthenoshere, it melts and is recycled. A deep ocean trench is created e.g. the Peru-Chile trench. The pressure on the continental plate causes it to buckle and fold creating a fold mountain. As the oceanic plate is melting, it produces volcanoes.
Give an example of a continental plate that is colliding with an oceanic plate?
The South American plate (C) and the Narzca plate (O)
Give an example of a volcanoe that was produced as a result of c to o collision?
Mt. St. Helen’s
Why is the Pacific ring of fire named so?
Because many active volcanoes created at subduction zones mark the edge of the Pacific plate
What are the land features of a O - O collision? give examples
Trenches e.g. The Mariana Trench and Island Arcs e.g. Iceland / Japan
What happens at o - o boundaries?
Subduction
Give an example of 2 O plates that are colliding?
The fast-moving Pacific plate collides with and subducts under the slow-moving Philippine plate to create the Mariana trench
How are island arcs formed?
Island Arcs are curved lines of volcanic island. When the subducted plate sinks and melts it creates plumes of magma that breaks through the crust above. The active volcanoes build up on the sea floor for millions of years until they appear above the surface of the water.
