Convergency and Conversion angle | 2 Flashcards
The rhumb line track from A to B is 270° and the great circle track is 266°. The coordinates of A is 31°N/S and 176° W. What is the position of B?
We need to figure out if it’s in the northern or southern hemisphere.
Draw four converging lines which each two resembles both the northern and southern hemisphere.
The great circle track will be a straight line, and the rhumb line a curved track towards the equator.
Select the diagram that is true to this principle.
The CA = the difference between the great circle track and the rhumb line track.
= 4°
Convergency = 2x CA
= 8°
Convergency = ch’long x sine of latitude
= 8° / sine 31° = 15° 31’
The aircraft is travelling west towards the ante-meridian.
176° + 15° = 191°
191° - 180° = 11°
180 - 11° = 169° E.
The position of B = 31° S 169° E
Given : A is N55° 000° B is N54° E010° The average true course of the great circle is 100°. The true course of the rhumbline at point A is:
The average true course is the rhumb line track. Since one will fly a constant angle.
A meridian is a rhumb line or great circle?
Both. They cut the earth in half, and also remain at a constant angle.
The equator is a rhumb lie or great circle?
Both. It cuts the earth in half, and also remain at a constant angle.
A parallel of latitude is a rhumb line or great circle?
Rhumb line, it cuts each meridian at a constant angle but does not cut the earth in half.
A great circle track is the shortest -
arc on the globe between two points
Viewed from space, a great circle will appear as a -
curved line(no straight lines exist on earth) towards the poles
Between a RL and GC which track reciprocal is valid?
RL
Convergency is the difference between the -
initial and final great circle tracks
Do we have to apply the departure formula for a distance along a meridian?
No, a distance along a meridian is true. Same with a distance along the equator
