Convection and Tephigram Flashcards
Thunderstorm sequence
During cumulus, strong updrafts provide moisture and condense.
Matured: heavy precip, updrafts and downdrafts continually saturating
Updrafts end and precip lightens.
If parcel of air is satured, water will
condense as the parcel is lifted and temp decreases
Latent heat released as water condenses
Equivalent Potential Temp
a quantity conservered during changes to an air parcel’s pressure
Dew point Temp Td
Temp at which air must be cooled at constant pressure to become saturated with respect to surf of water
When T decreased Ws decreases.
Dew point : Ws = w (sat = act)
Lifting condensation level
Level which parcel of air can be lifted adiabatically before becoming saturated
Adiabatic condensed water content
Air rise above LCL w=ws
As air cools at wet adi lapse, ws will decrease and more water condenses.
Change in ws from H to H = amount of water condensed.
