Convection Flashcards
1
Q
Where does convection happen
A
In liquids and gases
2
Q
What is convection
A
The movement of heat in liquids and gases
3
Q
Give an example of an experiment of convection currents
A
- A fluid such as air or water is heated
- It expanses and so becomes less dense than the surrounding cooler fluid
- it floats upwards and cooler fluids go in to replace it
- In turn, this colder fluid is heated, expands and rises
- Meanwhile, the hotter fluid gets further away from the heat source and cools, it then sinks back down
4
Q
Why can’t convection occur in solids
A
Convection does not occur in solids because the particles within are too tightly packed to facilitate the process. Convection requires actual movement between the particles within a substance in order to transfer heat which is only possible in a fluid state of matter such as liquid or gas.
