Convection Flashcards

Q
Why doesn’t convection occur in solids?
A
The particles don’t move.
1
Q
What is convection?
A
When particles move from an area of high temperature to an area of low temperature.
2
Q
Where does convection occur?
A
In gases and liquids.
3
Q
Explain how convection works in water.
A
As the particles heat up, they get more energy. This causes a greater distance between particles and the water expands, making it less dense. The hotter water then rises above the denser, cooler water. At the top, cool water particles collide with hot water particles, transferring energy. The particles then get cooler and so denser and begin to sink.
