Convection Flashcards
What is convection?
Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of heated particles of liquids and sometimes gases.
How does convection work?
Convection occurs when heated particles rise up and take the place of cooler particles. These cooler particles then sink and this repeats. This happens in a circular motion.
Why do heated particles rise?
They are less dense than cooler particles
Why do cooler particles sink?
They are more dense.
Why does there need to be a heat source for convection?
The cooler particles have to be warmed again so they rise to keep a flow of particles going round.
Why doesn’t convection happen in solids?
Because the particles can’t move freely in solids.
