Conduction Flashcards
What is thermal conduction?
THERMAL CONDUCTION is a form of heat transfer where THERMAL ENERGY is transferred from one place to another via VIBRATING PARTICLES.
What is a material if it is has HIGH THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY?
A good conductor
- copper
-silver
-metals tend to be good conductors
What is a material if it is has LOW THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY?
A poor conductor
-plastic
-wood
-rubber
-wool
If heat is applied to one end of a steel rod how does conductivity make the other end of the rod hot?
1.The particles that are being heated by a heat source vibrate about their fixed position.
2.They collide with their neighbouring particles which passes along kinetic energy.
3.This happens until all of the particles are vibrating. (vibrating warms up the particles)
In which compound is conduction used to heat up things?
Solid
What do solid particles look like?
The particles are in a fixed position but can vibrate on the spot.
How to get 6 marks in the practical question
Mark 1) Safety aspects
Mark 2) Write the whole method
Mark 3) Write the correct method
Mark 4) Include specific equipment
Mark 5) Make sure quantities are accurate
Mark 6) Equation (if needed), which kind of
graph, repeats and mean etc.
Why does conduction very rarely occur in liquids and gases?
The particles aren’t close enough together.
