Convection Flashcards
Heat transfer can only happen in 2 fluids which are?
Liquids and gas
What do the particles do when heated?
Gain energy and move away from each other and become less dense, so they rise.
What do the cold particles do?
They have less energy so they become more dense so they sink.
What do you call it when particles do the motion of going cold then warm?
A convection current
What do particles do when they are in a solid?
Vibrating
What do the particles do when they get hotter?
Thye vibrate more.
Why are solids better than conducting heat than liquids and gases?
Because all of the particles are closer.
What are the best conductors of heat
The conductors of heat are metal
What is the name of materials that don’t conduct heat?
They are called isulators.
What colours absorb heat well and what colours don’t?
Black absorbs heat well but shiny white doesn’t.
Why can thermal radiation travel through a vacum but other heat transfers can’t?
Because radiation doesn’t need particles to move. It travels through waves.
