What was the role of Goebbels and the Ministry of Propaganda?
To enforce Nazi ideology to the point of controlling the attitudes and thoughts of the population.
How did the Nazis use media and rallies?
To glamourise and enforce Nazi values. A “hollywood” style film made of it called “The Triumph of the Will” was made of the Nuremberg Rally in 1934.
How was the 1936 Olympics used as Propaganda?
All events and the stadium was designed to show Nazi efficiency. The stadium was deliberately designed to look like a Roman coliseum.
How did the Nazis control art and architecture?
Albert Speer was the main architect and wanted buildings to look strong and reflect dominance, power and importance.
An example of this was the offices of the Chancellor, opened in Berlin in 1938.
How did the Nazis control literature and film?
Films shown in German cinemas had a 45 minute newsreel before them that showcased Germany’s achievements. All filmmakers had to get Goebbels’ approval about the plot details.
Jazz music was banned.
Existing books containing views which the Nazis did not like were censored. 2,500 writers were banned.
Millions of books were taken from public libraries and burned on huge public bonfires. These included books written by Jewish authors such as Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud.
