Controlled Substances Flashcards
The Drug Schedules
The Drug Schedules are based on potential abuse or accepted medical use.
Schedule I drugs are tightly regulated by the Federal Government and have no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. Examples of Schedule I drugs are heroin, LSD, and Ecstasy.
Net Weight vs. Gross Weight
Gross Weight is the weight of the packages and its contents. Net Weight is just the weight of the contents.
What is tare weight?
Weight of the empty container, by subtracting the tare weight from the tare weight, you have weight of the material/substance.
How should fresh marijuana be packaged?
Package fresh marijuana in paper bags to avoid mold.
Know the difference between the identification of marijuana and the identification of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
ID of marijuana with microscopic characteristics (glandular hairs, cystolithic hairs) and positive to Duquenois color test. ID of THC with the GCMS.
What does the DOJ NOT accept
DOJ lab does not accept drug paraphernalia for examination (ie syringes, needles and razor blades). Drug can be placed into a vial for submission.
What should PCP OR LSD be packaged in
Suspected PCP or LSD must be packaged in Kapak or chemical resistant, heat-sealed container.
Presumptive tests/Preliminary
Presumptive tests/Preliminary tests can narrow down what the substance can possibly be. Presumptive/Preliminary tests do not identify the substance.
Qualitative vs, Quantitative
Analysis-Qualitative analysis-identification of the substance, Quantitative Analysis-purity of the substance, what % of the material present. CA DOJ does qualitative analysis. DEA does quantitative analysis.
GCMS (Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer
is an instrument that is used to identify controlled substances.
FTIR (Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy
can also identify certain controlled substances.
Examples of Clandestine Laboratories
-MDMA, methamphetamine, PCP, LSD, Butane Honey oil (BHO)
Two methods to manufacture methamphetamine
Anhydrous ammonia, Red phosphorus method. Anhydrous ammonia method- lower yield, less waste, bucket chemistry. Red phosphorus method-higher yield, more waste, more glassware at scenes
