Control and Regulation 2 Flashcards
What are precursors?
Initial substrates for the metabolic pathway
What are common intermediates?
Compounds which occur at cross-over or branching points in metabolic pathways
What is the branching point?
Point at which an intermediate may proceed down one of several alternative pathways, depending on the cell’s needs. Pathways can be selected by altering activity of the enzymes at a branching point.
How are metabolic processes controlled?
amount of enzyme
catalytic activity
accessibility of substrate
What is the result of negative feedback
and positive feedback
Negative feedback - allosteric inhibition
Positive feedback - allosteric stimulation
What are the 6 types of reactions ?
Oxidation-Reduction
Group transfer
Hydrolytic
Carbon bond cleavage
Isomerisation
Ligation requiring ATP cleavage
What is energy?
Energy is defined as the capacity to do work.
The more reduced a molecule the more energy it contains
Hydrolysis of ATP releases energy
