What is the lactational amenorrhea method of birth control?
Efficient for breastfeeding women where you keep the baby suckling to decrease GnRH, LH and FSH so fertility remains low
What are the side effects of OC birth control?
Nausea, breast tenderness, amenorrhea, HTN
What is a very important risk to consider when prescribing patients birth control pills?
If they smoke and if they are predisposed to clots because this increases VTE/blood clot risk
How does the patch (Xulane) work?
applied weekly x 3 weeks then removed for 1 week
How do you use the vaginal ring?
Left in for 3 weeks then taken out for 1 week and releases hormones
What is the minipills?
A small dose of progestin alone taken every day (Norethindrone) which provides good protection without suppressing ovulation (makes cervical mucus less permeable to sperm)
What is the depo?
Shot of depo medroxyprogestrone acetate given q3 months and suppresses ovulation, makes cervical mucus thick and thins endomitreum so implantation is less likely
The depo shot has a significant side effect. What is it and what is recommended to take with it?
Reduction in bone mineral density so its recommended to take calcium and do weight bearing exercise
