What is the definition of contraception?
Any method to prevent pregnancy
What are three ways in which contraception can prevent pregnancy?
Blocking sperm transport, disruption of HPG axis, inhibit implantation
How long postnatally can the lactational amenorrhoea method of natural contraception last?
Six months, after that no longer form of reliable contraception
How does a high dose of progesterone prevent ovulation?
Progesterone has negative feedback on production on LH and FSH and also enhances the negative feedback of oestrogen so no LH surge causing ovulation
How do lower doses of progesterone help to prevent pregnancy?
Thicken the cervical mucus
What are some advantages of the combined oral contraceptive pill?
Reliable if used correctly, can relieve menstrual disorders, reduces risk of endometrial/ovarian cancer and can alleviate acne symptoms
What are some disadvantages of the combined oral contraceptive pill?
User dependent, increases risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, CVD. Can have side effects of spotting (AUB), breast tenderness and mood disturbance
What are some advantages of the progesterone only pill?
Reliable if used correctly, can be used if COCP contraindicated
What are some disadvantages of the progesterone only pill?
Strict timings for taking pill, menstrual irregularities (spotting), increased risk of ectopic pregnancy
