Copper ions prevent fertilisation by immobilising sperm

PID
Gonorrhoea

What are some side effects of IUD?
Intermenstrual bleeding and increased duration/ heaviness of periods
How long can an IUD be left in?
5 years
What is the only contraceptive method suitable for women with active breast cancer?
IUD
How does COCP work?
Progestogen exerts negative feedback on hypothalamus reducing GnRH so suppresses FSH and LH
What is an advantage of COCP?
Regulates and lightens periods
What are some side effects of COCP?
Headache
Mood disturbance
Intermenstrual bleeding
What are some contraindications for COCP?
Less than 6 weeks postpartum and breastfeeding
Aged 35 and smoking over 15 per day
Breast cancer
History of VTE
Stage 2 HTN
SLE
Migraine with aura
What is an advantage of the mini pill (progesterone only)?
Far fewer contraindications and effective from 2 days
How does the mirena IUS work?
Thinning of endometrium by downregulation of endometrial oestrogen receptors to prevent implantation
What are some contraindications for mierna IUD?
PID

How long can the mirena IUD be left in?
3-5 years
How often does the depot injection have to be given?
