What is a contra-indication?

A

A situation where a drug, treatment of surgery should not be taken/ carried out at a particular time or requires further veterinary advice prior to treatment beginning. Can be temporary, permanent or specific to one area.

  • relative - where caution should be taken but treatment can be carried out if the benefits outweigh the risks
  • absolute - the treatment could cause a life threatening situation and should not be carried out at this time
