What is a contra-indication?
A situation where a drug, treatment of surgery should not be taken/ carried out at a particular time or requires further veterinary advice prior to treatment beginning. Can be temporary, permanent or specific to one area.
What are two types of contra-indications?
- relative - where caution should be taken but treatment can be carried out if the benefits outweigh the risks
- absolute - the treatment could cause a life threatening situation and should not be carried out at this time
Name some contra-indications of massage.
- pregnancy
- hernia
- epilepsy
- diabetes
- cancer
- high temperature (39•c +)
- broken or fractured bones
- heat stroke
- suffering from shock
- open wounds
What is an isotonic contraction?
A muscle contraction where the length of the muscle changes and tension remains the same
What is an isometric contraction?
A muscle contraction where tension increases and the length of the muscle stays the same
What is an Eccentric contraction?
A type of isotonic contraction when the muscle length increases
What is a Concentric contraction?
Type of isotonic muscle contraction when the length of the muscle decreases
