Pregnancy
Massage should be avoided before first trimester, stroking movements only should then be performed on the abdomen
Pressure applied to joint may need to be adapted as joint soften during pregnancy
Positioning and supporting of the client should be considered and adapted to ensure client is comfortable dependent on stage of pregnancy
Additional time should be given for client to get of plinth. If using pre-blended massage oils ensure the content is suitable for use
Contagious skin disease
Due to increase in blood and lymphatic flow there is an increase risk of spreading the disease further on the body
Dysfunction or disorders of nervous system
Nerve impulses may be abnormal, muscles may exhibit increased tone which may be made worse by the treatment and skin sensation may be impaired
Undiagnosed lumps and swelling
Unknown origin, area should be avoided completely until it has been diagnosed by a GP as massage could cause disturbance in the underlying cells
Recent Scar Tissue
If treatment is carried out before healing is complete, there is a risk of further damaging the tissues delaying the healing process
Any injury or damage to the tissues must be healed completely prior to massage
