Continuity of life Flashcards
What is reproduction?
The life process that gives rise to new generation from an existing generation is referred to as reproduction.
What are the 2 types of reproduction?
Asexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction
What is asexual reproduction?
Reproduction that occurs from spores or vegetative parts of a matured organism is known as asexual reproduction.
What is sexual reproduction?
Reproduction that occurs due to the fusion of two gametes produced in the sexual structures of male and female organisms is known as sexual reproduction
What are the differences between asexual and sexual reproduction?
Asexual reproduction contributes only one parental organism whereas sexual reproduction contributes 2 organisms which are referred to as maternal and paternal
Asexual reproduction gives rise to offspring which are more or less like the maternal parent.
In asexual reproduction, no gametes are produced whereas in sexual reproduction gametes are produced
What is vegetative propagation?
Generating new plants from underground or aerial parts of a mother plant is referred to as vegetative propagation.
What are the two types of vegetative propagation/ reproduction?
Artificial vegetative propagation
Natural vegetative propagation
What is natural vegetative propagation?
Generating new plants naturally from underground or aerial parts of the mother plant is known as natural vegetative propagation.
What are some plants which reproduce from roots?
Curry leaves
Bread fruit
Slime wood
What are some plants that propagate through leaves?
Begonia, Akkapana, Queen of the night
What are suckers?
Small plants that rise horizontally from the basal part of the stem under the soil are known as suckers
What are some examples for suckers?
Paddy
Banana
pineapple
What is meant by runners?
Plant stems that run along the surface of the soil connecting the stem to the soil by adventitious roots are the runners
What are some examples of runners?
Gotukola, Sweet potatoes, Raavanan meesai
What are bulbils?
A special reproductive structure formed by a modification of a vegetative bud or a flower bud is known as a bulbil.
