Why launch the Continental System
Napoleon as never able to defeat Britain, its control of the seas was secured at Trafalgar in 1805. The British fleet was able to blockade French ports, affecting their economy

Forbade any trade with Britain in most of Europe.
Designed to damage Britains economy and withdraw from the war

French industries that relied on exports suffered, but new trade routes opened along the Rhine and Alps

Lack of French sea power hampered the system. Britain opened new routes in the Americas, but the CS was definitely a cause of the Anglo-American war of 1812

Failed to defeat Britain
Invading Portugal to enforce it meant France entered the peninsular war. This drained resources greatly and led to fighting on 2 fronts 1812-14
Russian campaign in 1812 which led to his downfall was partly caused by Russian refusal to continue the CS
