Continental Drift Theory Flashcards
What is the Continental Drift Theory?
Theory explaining on how the earth used to be connected landmass, also known as Pangea.
Who is the orignator of the Continental Drift Theory?
Alfred Wegener
Who is Alfred Wegener?
Originator of the Continental Drift Theory, his idea of the continents drifting started when he noticed that the edges of south America and Africa could be fitted together.
Why wasn’t Alfred Wegener’s idea recognized?
Because he wasn’t able to explain how the continents moved, only that the continents were once connected.
What are Wegener’s evidence to support his theory?
- Geological “FIT”
- Fossil Evidence
What is the Geological “FIT”
Matching of large geological features such as the coast line of south America and west Africa.
What was the fossil evidence that Wegener showed as proof?
Wegener only briefly stated that there are fossils present in different continents that should’ve been physically not possible.
Additional Proof to the Continental Drift Theory
- Plate Tectonic Theory
- Lithospheric Plates
What is Plate Tectonic Theory?
States that the Earth’s lithosphere, is divided Into plates that moves slowly.
What is Pangea?
Connected landmasses
What does Pangea mean in Greek?
All Earth
