Q

What are pressure waves?

A

A wave (such as a sound wave) in which the propagated disturbance came from pressure made in material medium.

Q

What kind of waves does seismologist study?

A

The waves seismologist study moves through material, these types of waves are called body waves.

And body waves produce surface waves.

Q

What are the 2 types of body waves created when an earthquake occurs?

8
Q

Why is the P-Wave named the P-Wave?

A

Because it is faster than S-Waves, and therefore first to arrive at any point distant from the epicenter of the earth, or the first to be recorded in the seismograph.

Q

How can P-waves and S-waves help seismologist?

A

The differences in the arrival of S and P waves at different locations around the world help seismologist determine the location of the focus and epicenter of the earthquake.

Q

Longitudinal waves are also called?

A

Push waves, because particle pushes energy along in the same orientation as the direction the wave moves.

Q

What is a P (Primary) wave?

A

The faster one of the 2 body waves and the one that arrives first at the seismometer (the internal part of the seismograph).

P-waves have a push-pull motion, and can move through solid, liquid, and gasses.

16
Q

What is an S (secondary) wave?

A

It is slower than P-waves, also known as shear wave, and have an up and down motion.

This type of wave does not travel through anything liquid.

17
Q

Who discovered the P-Wave Shadow Zone?

A

Inge Lehman

18
Q

Who discovered the S-Wave Shadow Zone?

A

Beno Gutenberg

19
Q

Who is Inge Lehmann?

A

A Danish scientist who discovered the P-Wave Shadow zone.

In 1886, she discovered that the earth have a solid inner core inside a molten outer core.

Her discovery was based on her reasearch on the behavior of seismic wave after an earthquake.

20
Q

What happens to seismic waves after an earthquake?

A

When waves move through a material they change directions, meaning they reflect and refract, and they also change velocity when they hit a material that is different density.

21
Q

Where does Body Wave Travel?

A

The interior of the planet.

22
Q

What happens when the P-Wave hit the outer core?

A

They are deflected in a such a way that there is no record of P-waves on the other side of the earth.

The area that there is no record of P-waves is called the P-wave Shadow zone.

23
Q

What is the P-Wave Shadow Zone?

A

It is the area of the earth where there is no history record of P-waves, because when the P-waves hit the outer core, they are deflected.

24
Q

Who is Beno Gutenberg?

A

A seismologist who discovered the S-Wave Shadow zone.

25
Q

Why is the S-Wave Shadow zone large?

A

Because the S-Wave that emanate from the focus and travel through the earth are completely absorbed by the outer core, in which, should be liquid because S-Wave cannot pass through liquid.

26
Q

What are surface waves?

A

They are the waves formed when the body waves reflect and refract of off the surface of the earth.

27
Q

What are the two kinds of Surface Waves?

A

Love Waves and Rayleigh Wave

28
Q

What are love waves?

A

It was discovered by Augustus Love, it is the third fastest of the waves and it is a shear motion, but also a side to side motion.

It is the most damaging type of wave.

29
Q

What is a Rayleigh Wave?

A

It is discovered by John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh.

It is the slowest wave, they provide the rolling motion during an earthquake.

It causes most of the shaking during an earthquake.

30
Q

Why is that the nearer you are to an earthquake the more dangerous it is?

A

Because the nearer you are, the more you will feel the P-waves, S-Waves, love waves, and Rayleigh Waves all together.
