The Great Migration
Movement of 6 million African Americans from rural southern states to urban areas of the Northern states between 1916-1970
Plessy v Ferguson
- Homer Plessy, a mixed race man, boarded a white only train car
- Plessy was charged, but argued that Judge John Howard Ferguson should dismiss the charges on the grounds that it was unconstitutional
- Appealed to U.S. Supreme Court

Racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution as long as the facilities for each race were equal in quality (Separate but equal)
White Supremacy
Belief that white people constitute a superior race and should therefore dominate society
Marginalisation
Treatment of a person, group, or concept as insignificant
Harlem Renaissance
Intellectual and cultural revival of African American music, dance, fashion, literature etc. Centred in Harlem, Manhattan NYC, spanning the 1920s and 30s
The Tragic Mulatto
- Stereotypical character
- Mixed-race person who is assumed to be depressed because they don’t fit in to the ‘white’ or ‘black’ worlds
- Depicted as a victim of a society that is divided by race
Lynching
Killing people for an alleged offence without legal trial, especially by hanging
