Social and historical context
Elizabethan believed that god set an order of the great chain of being. Elizabethans were very superstitious
The great chain of being is….
A social order that god created a where everybody belonged ( eg: king, queen, farmer, butcher). If disobey the monarch it’s a sin which kept everything in order.
Patriarchy society
Where an individuals or individual are more superior and ruling than others.
Elizabethan view of marriage
Women belonged to fathers then to their husbands. Women can’t own their own property. One reason why queen Elizabeth 1 did not marry as she did not want to give up her power to a man. Only exception was widows. Women can marry at 12 (tho mostly women from wealthy families).
Superstition and supernatural
Fairies were a source of fascination, fear, evil, superstition and mystery among the people of the 16th century. Fairy belief was important to commoners.

Change and growth on children as fairies were thought to be controlled by emotions and impulse ; sometimes exact revenge on people, evil and mischievous

Tiny fairy that rides around in a coach made of an ‘empty hazlnut’ with spider ‘legs’ of wheel spokes, driven by an even tinier ‘grey coated gnat’ and drawn by ‘team of little atomi’.
