Muhammad spread islam across the Middle East (622 CE) The Umayyad Caliphate (622) was created and fell to the Abbasid Caliphate (750-158 fell to Mongols and other states)
Abbasid Caliphate:
- ethnically Arab
- a cultural home and in power during golden age of Islam - innovation, technology (House of Wisdom in Baghdad)
What was the economy like in the Middle East before rica 1200
the Abbasid Caliphate facilitated trade (by increasing merchant activity) which increased agricultural crops such as rice and cotton.
Economy was booming since it was during the golden age of Islam (new technologies, scientific thinking, etc.)
What contributed to the decline of empires before circa 1200
The Abbasid Caliphate fell due to foreign invasions of pastoralists (Seljuks), sunni and Shia schism, (630) and the vast expansion of the empire was too big to facilitate.
