The 1834 poor law amendment reduced help to the poor,forcing them to seek help at workhouses if they couldn’t support themselves
The conditions were incredibly harsh and designed to humiliate people in not wanting to go there
Ghost and the supernatural
Victorians made may technological advances thanks to interests in science and medicine ,they were also fascinated in the supernatural and things that couldn’t be explained by science
Ghost stories became eaxtremely popular as trying to contact the dead via seances
Christmas celebrations
-Christmas was lokey celebration at start 19th century ,queen Victorias husband,Albert introduced some European traditions,like decorated trees into traditional British Christmas celebrations during 1840
-during victorias reign ,workers given two days holiday to celebrate Christmas
Santa clause
Traditional figure of father christmas dressed in green to symbolise returning spring was familiar to Santa clause today
Christmas Day
Rich people would give each other hand made gifts and toys but stockings did not become popular UNTILL 1870
-turkey was only eaten by rich family’s and gooses by poorer
Industrial Revolution
Overpopulation-victorians had to move away from the countryside to find work
Childhood -many workers were needed to run machines and the cheapest way was child labour children as young as 5 would work
