Context of ACC
● Dickens believed that wealthy individuals have a duty to create positive change in
society and solve issues through their actions.
● In 1834, the government amended the Poor Laws to reduce the cost of supporting
the poor by introducing harsh workhouses which were like a ‘prison for the poor’.
The laws were influenced by the views of Thomas Malthus, an economist, who
believed that the poor should not be supported but allowed to die in order to
preserve food and resources for those that could work and look after
themselves. This view is embodied through the character of Scrooge in Stave
One.
● Redemption means ‘being saved from error or sin’. In A Christmas Carol, the reader
follows Scrooge’s redemption from a greedy miser to a kind, philanthropic man.
