Location of Cities along the Nile River
-The source of Egypt’s wealth was the Nile River.
-Cities were built along the Nile River because it provided water for transportation and drinking water.
-The Nile River was also used for irrigation of crops.
-The flooding of the Nile River was an annual event. The floods fertilized fields and brought forth an abundance of food.
-The discovery of a dried-up branch of the Nile called the Ahramat branch was discovered near the pyramids. This may help explain the location of the pyramids and how limestone bricks may have been ferried to and from the construction sites of the pyramids.
Pyramids and Afterlife
-Pharaohs built pyramids to show their power and be closer to the heavens after death.
-Pharaohs were buried with objects, animals, and servants that they believed would be beneficial in the afterlife.
-Fake doors were painted in the pyramids as connections between the living and the dead.
-Guards were responsible for protecting the pyramids so robbers would not steal the wealth inside the pyramids.
-They stopped building pyramids because they cost a lot of time and money, and it was too easy for robbers since they knew they contained great wealth.
-The pyramids were an achievement because there were not the tools and technology that there is today to construct them.
Mummification
-Egyptians prepared for the afterlife to preserve the body as long as possible through the process known as embalming.
-The only organ left in the body was the heart. The other organs were removed and placed in Canopic jars.
-Natron was a salty substance that was used to dry out the body.
-Once the mummy was wrapped, it was placed in a sarcophagus.
