How to become a national artist?
- Must be a Filipino citizen or at least at the time of nomination. Artist who has passed away can still be nominated as long as he/she was Filipino before death.
- Must have made significant contributions to the country’s cultural heritage.
- Must have accomplishments at their highest level and to promote creative expression significant to the development of a national cultural identity;
- Must have dedicated their lives to their works to forge new paths and directions for future generations of Filipino artists.
Benefits of a National Artist
- Rank and title of a national artist
- Medal bearing the insignia of the National Artist as well as the citation
- A lifetime emolument and material and physical benefits comparable in value to those received by the highest officers of the land such as;
a. Cash award of P200,000 net of taxes for living awardees;
b. Cash award of P150,000 net of taxes, for posthumous awardees payable to the
legal heir/s
c. A monthly life pension, medical and hospitalization benefits
d. Life insurance coverage
e. State funeral and burial at the libingan ng mga bayani
f. Reserve place at state functions, awarding ceremonies, and cultural events.

How to become a national living treasure?
- Artist must be a Filipino citizen or a group of citizens belonging to an indigenous/traditional community.
- Must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence for at least 50 years.
- Must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period works of superior and distinctive quality
- Must possess a mastery of tools and materials
- Must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community
