Contact forces Flashcards
What is force measured in
Newtons (N)
What are thinking distance, Braking distance, and total stopping distance
-Thinking distance =Distance traveled before braking
-Braking distance= Distance the car travels as its braking
-Total stopping distance= Thinking + braking distance
What factors affect stopping distance
-Speed and mass of the car
-Tyre and road conditions
-Braking efficiency
-Alertness of driver
What is the force of gravity
-(Fg)
-Fg=mg=weight
-Weight is the amount of force acting on a mass due to the acceleration due to gravity
What is Newton’s first law
-Newton’s first law states that if a body is at rest or moving at a constant speed in a straight line, it will remain at rest or keep moving in a straight line at a constant speed unless it is acted upon by an external force
What is Inertia
-A property of mass (matter) where an object will tend to resist changes in motion
-The more inertia that an object has the greater its mass
More inertia can make it harder to…
-Accelerate an object
-Increase or decrease the velocity of an object
-Change the direction of an object
What is Newton’s second law
-Newton’s second law states that: The acceleration of an object is directly proportionate to the net force acting upon the object and inversely proportionate upon the mass of the object
