Consuming Enerygy Resources Flashcards
What are the three types of energy resources, and how much of the worlds energy are produced by them and what examples
Non-renewable – 86% – fossil fuels – finite stock
Renewable – 9.3% – flow of resources – HEP, solar, wind, wave
Recyclable – 4.4% – can be reused e.g. biofuels and nuclear power
Describe how the global oil consumption has changed over time, And aimed example of a rapidly growing country and what most oil consumed goes towards
– Consumption rising since the 1990s due to increasing demand for energy in wealthier populations – mainly through development and industrialisation in emerging countries such as China
– Chinese consumption has travelled during this time making it the second highest global consumer of oil – behind USA – 12% and 20% respectively
– 70% of oil consumed is to transport people and goods around the world and is used at a rate of 1000 barrels per second
What are the main causes of fluctuations in oil prices
Changes in Supply and demand
What effect has increasing global economic growth has an oil prices and why
Increased – increase in demand
What are two reasons for a fool in oil prices and give examples
– Periods of recession e.g. after 2008 – economy slowdown so if you are goods were bought – less demand for oil – price fall
– conflict between oil rich nations – e.g. 2013 to 14 Iran and Saudi Arabia failed to agree production targets, Saudi Arabia produced more and prices fell
What causes short-term oil price spikes and what is an example
– Oil spills, explosions or conflict – e.g. explosion of the 2010 BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico
What is OPEC
The organisation of the petroleum exporting countries – and intergovernmental organisation for oil producers and exporters
What happens when OPEC work together
Its members have immense power to influence the supply and price of oil to global markets
Describe the founding of OPEC
– September 1960 in baghdad , Iraq
Signing of an agreement by five countries- Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Exxon corporation oil extraction
– Provides employment for 800 workers
– costs $4 billion, leaks or accidents could be ecologic Lee expensive with long lasting impact
What are advantages and disadvantages of wind energy
Clean, no air pollution, huge generating capacity especially offshore, Cheapest source of energy to the consumer
Visual pollution, offshore transmission lines are expensive, four birds deaths per turbine
What is estimated will happen to the global demand for oil between 2013 and 2015, why and what will this cause
- increase by 37%
- improved living standards, population growth
- relying heavily on fossil fuels- environmental impact
What was predicted to happen in 2015 by 2020 and what are the main reasons
Usage of non renewables could drop by 76%
Rising affluence, environmental concerns, education
How does rising affluence effect attitude to non renewables
Rising incomes- rising desire- but can be used to encourage alternative sources to be developed- money to invest in technology
How has environmental concerns led to a change in attitude towards energy
Greater awareness of impacts- worldwide shift in energy choice- greater urgency for development of sustainable
