Consuming Energy Flashcards
How much energy does the USA use
It uses 21% of global energy for its 4.5% of the world population
 Changing price of oil reasons
Oil producing countries have supply issues
OPREC countries restrict oil supplies to make the prices high like Saudi Arabia
Conflict causes prices to skyrocket
Recessions can cause fluctuation
Fracking
Fracking is when we drill horizontally and blast water into a rock fractures which is the process called fracking. And it gets the oil from shale deposits. This makes the USA less reliant on imported oil.
Tar sands
Tar sands are a mixture of sand clay and water and have a form of petrol in them called bitumen. This is extracted by injecting hot steam into the tar sand and pumps out the bitumen. This requires enormous amounts of energy and water
Issues with tar sands in Athabasca
It requires huge amounts of water and sometimes the oil leeches into the Athabasca river which causes water pollution. This often leads to the fish getting ill and people who eat the fish also getting ill. The development of tar sands has caused the decline of many animal species like Karibu wolverines and lots of birds. He also involves the destruction of forests and a lot of ecosystems
How does London become more renewable
Buses are hybrid so they’re more fuel efficient
There are Santander bikes which encourage cycling there is the congestion charge which stops heavy polluting vehicles from going into London
Conventional oil extraction
Quicker and cheaper
Goes into the gas reservoir and is more efficient
Fracking (unconventional)
Goes into gas rock rather than reservoir and is much more expensive and time consuming
High pressures of water to extract shale, which we get shale gas from
