What is a consumer?
Someone who buys goods/services for their own use
What happens when you buy a good/service?
You enter a contract (a legal agreement between two people) with the seller
What is proof of purchase?
Something that proves a customer has paid for an item e.g. a receipt
Name the 3 main laws protecting consumer contracts in Ireland
- The Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980
- The Consumer Protection Act 2007
- The Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2014
What does the Sale of Good and Supply of Sevices Act 1980 state regarding goods?
Goods must be: fit for purpose, of merchantable quality, correspond with samples and as described
What does thr Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 state regarding services?
Services must be: carried out by someone with the necessary skills, carried out with care and attention
What is a guarantee/warranty?
A written promise from a manufacturer to repair/refund/replace faulty goods within a certain period of time post-purchase
What is distance selling?
The sale and purchase of goods and services that doesn’t happen in person e.g. online shopping
What do trade associations do?
Investigate and attempt to sort out any problems consumers have im a certain industry
What does the Office of the Ombudsman do?
Investigate complaints against public bodies made by members of the public
What is the purpose of the Small Claims procedure?
To give consumers a cheap and fast way to settle a legal dispute without a solicitor
Talk about the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC)
It was set up in 2014 to replace the National Consumer Agency
What do the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) do?
Promote good advertising standards
