What are emotions?
A conscious experience in response to an external or internal stimulus which causes intense mental activity
Can be either pleasurable or unpleasant
What are feelings?
Mental associations and reactions to emotions
They are subjective, and influenced by personal expeirences, beliefs and memories

The generalised opinion of society
What consulations techniques can be really useful when dealing with mental health problems?
Giving them space
Use of a private space
Use of silences to allow them to think
What is a PHQ-9?
Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)
Used to (semi) diagnose depression
What are the 6 sub-sections of ‘Brief Advice’?
Listen –> To concerns
Observe –> For health/lifestyle issues
Ask –> In a non-threatening manner
Assess –> The persons response (is it positive for change?)
Advise –> If the patient is interested
Record –> The overall outcome
What is a Brief Intervention?
A 1-to-1 conversartion for about 30seconds-60mins! that prompts the listener to think about a particular issue (eg, alcohol abuse)
More detailed discussion in addition to the supply of medicines
