Clients put trust in us and expect that we will help and not harm, We need to know what we are doing, why we are doing and why we need assistance, Are we practicing within standard of care?
What are the three implications of competence?
Ethical, Legal, Clinical
What does Ethical mean when referring to competence?
Do not harm! Incompetence leads to harm, often unintentional
What does Legal mean when referring to competence?
Malpractice, licensing complaints
What does Clinical mean when referring to competence?
Provide good clinical care
How do we maintain and develop new areas of competence?
Education, Advanced training, CE’s, Supervision, Consultation, Professional Organizations/Specialty divisions, Collaboration with peers
Registration
Least degree of regulatory practice (Voluntary listing of professional with certain titles
Certification
Criteria for minimum standards has been met; voluntary group promoting professional identity
Licensure
Statutes that dictate what professional can and cannot do; typically requires CE
Certification and Licensure
Assures public that the provider has met educational requirements, supervised experience, evaluative screening
